Overview

Senior High School Curriculum

As of our last update, the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in Kenya has been gradually implemented across different levels of education, including senior high school. The CBC aims to shift from the traditional content-based curriculum to one that focuses on developing competencies and skills among learners. Here’s an overview of the senior high school curriculum under the CBC:

1. Structure and Duration:
– Senior high school in Kenya typically consists of two years (Form 3 and Form 4).
– The curriculum is structured to provide a broad and balanced education, focusing on both academic subjects and technical and vocational skills.

2. Competency Areas:
– The CBC emphasizes seven key learning areas (competency areas) that are integrated into the curriculum:
– Languages (English, Kiswahili, and an option of a foreign language)
– Mathematics
– Sciences
– Humanities and Social Science
– Creative Arts
– Physical and Health Education
– Religious Education and Values

3. Focus on Competencies:
– The curriculum is designed to develop specific competencies in each of these areas, such as communication, critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, digital literacy, citizenship, and ethical literacy.

4. Examinations and Assessment:
– Assessment under the CBC is continuous and is meant to be formative rather than just summative.
– There is less emphasis on high-stakes examinations and more on assessing learners’ progress through various methods, including portfolios, projects, performances, and practical assessments.

5. Technical and Vocational Pathways:
– The CBC also includes pathways for technical and vocational education and training (TVET), allowing students to develop skills relevant to specific trades and industries.

6. Cross-Curricular Issues:
– The curriculum integrates cross-cutting issues such as environmental education, gender, human rights, and HIV/AIDS education across all learning areas.

7. Teacher Preparation and Training:
– Teachers undergo training to effectively implement the CBC, focusing on learner-centered pedagogies and assessment practices that align with competency-based learning.

Entry Requirements

As of January 2022, specific information from the Kenya’s Ministry of Education guidelines for 2024. However, the general requirements for admission to senior high schools in Kenya typically include:

1.Completion of Primary Education: Students must have completed the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination.

2.KCPE Results: Admission to high school is based on KCPE results. Different schools may have varying cutoff scores depending on their competitiveness.

3.Placement by Ministry of Education: The Ministry of Education in Kenya typically oversees the placement of students into public and some private secondary schools based on their KCPE scores and school choices.

4.School Choice: Students may list their preferred high schools during the selection process, and placements are made based on performance and available slots.

5.Additional Requirements: Some schools may have additional requirements such as interviews, medical examinations, or specific documentation.

The CBC aims to equip learners with practical skills and competencies that prepare them for further education, the workforce, and citizenship responsibilities. It emphasizes holistic development, individualized learning pathways, and the application of knowledge in real-world contexts. For the most detailed and updated information, it is recommended to consult the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) or the Ministry of Education directly.

For the most accurate and updated information, especially regarding any changes or updates made by the Ministry of Education, it’s advisable to check their official website or contact them directly closer to the year 2024.
